Inspired By Numbers

Christopher Adams

Internship: Bachelor of information and communication technologies with research impacts positively on employment.

Christopher Adams is in his element when he is auditing a company’s assets and helping clients succeed.

He had a love of numbers when he came to UCOL | Te Pūkenga, however understanding asset registers sparked an even keener interest. His interest grew when he completed his research paper, delving into the benefits of a well-kept asset register, understanding gains and losses from both good and bad perspectives. He learnt how the consequences of poorly managed systems could affect companies negatively and then, with changes, improve systems. Through this research project, he was also able to confirm employment seven months before he graduated!

Having good time management and critical thinking, he found a way of supporting fellow students through their studies through COVID. Creating online groups, chats and support to keep everyone motivated and sharing what they were doing. ”What we didn’t know as individuals, we helped each other learn as a group.” For this work, he gained the UCOL Te Pūkenga Andrew Cliff Scholarship.

In Chris’ internship with QEC, he was privileged to work with the QEC accountant. Chris found her so open, friendly and professional, especially in the way she allowed him to explore and investigate the assets of the school. As a school is a public entity, accounts are allowed to be viewed, therefore it was a good environment, for him to start work in this accounting area. With laws changing, interest rates moving and government politics dancing, accountants’ job of asset management needs to happen regularly to enable their clients to be successful. Chris says,

“Nothing feels as good as to fail. Because when you find mistakes in this area you can implement change for the growth of the company. This internship experience challenged the way I looked at things and enabled me to grow.”
